Introduction

Breathable All-weather Mittens

The UL Mittens are ultralight and easy to carry, weighing just 19g. They were born from the idea of reusing surplus fabric from the UL All-weather Hoody.

The UL Mittens combine breathable Pertex Shield Air with highly waterproof Pertex Shield Pro in areas most exposed to rain. This helps keep your hands dry and comfortable throughout long hikes.

*Because the seams are not seam-sealed, these mittens are not fully waterproof. For seam-sealing instructions, please refer to Support.

2026 Model Updates
Updated to combine two fabrics: Pertex Shield Air and Shield Pro. For details, please see here.

Fabric Color
Because these mittens use leftover fabric from the UL All-weather Hoody, the fabric color may vary very slightly depending on the section.

Form and function

Two Fabrics, One All-weather Mitten

Pertex Shield Pro is used on the back of the hand, where rain hits directly, for its balance of waterproofness and breathability. On the palm side, where heat and moisture tend to build up, we use breathable Pertex Shield Air to help release warm air from inside the mitten during high-output activity.

This hybrid construction improves protection in wet weather while maintaining the airy, breathable feel unique to Pertex Shield Air.

Details

A three-dimensional thumb design allows for natural, unrestricted movement.

These compact mittens can be stashed in any pocket. At just 19g you wouldn’t hesitate to take pack them out for your next adventure.

The paper-thin UL Mittens are touchscreen compatible, allowing for easy smartphone use.
*Does not work whhen wearing liner gloves.

Quickly adjust the fitting of the wrist with the cord lock.

Material

Pertex Shield Air

Pertex Shield Air pushes nanofiber membrane technology further, improving water resistance, wash durability, and overall consistency.

Its hydrophobic polyurethane resin is layered into a fine, web-like structure. Unlike conventional waterproof-breathable materials, it does more than let moisture vapor escape—it allows air itself to move through. That physical airflow is what creates its exceptionally open, airy feel.

To make the most of this breathability, Yamatomichi uses 15-denier outer fabric with a 40-denier ripstop grid, and a 7-denier lining. The result is an exceptionally light shell with outstanding airflow, even compared with shells made from other nanofiber materials.

Pertex Shield Pro

Pertex Shield Pro uses a hydrophobic, microporous polyurethane membrane: a web-like structure with countless microscopic pores.

These pores are small enough to block water, yet large enough for vapor to pass through. This allows Pertex Shield Pro to release moisture vapor directly from inside the shell, giving it excellent breathability.

Yamatomichi’s in-house testing found that the material helps prevent heat from building up inside the shell during activity, while also helping retain warmth when outside temperatures drop suddenly.

Notes before use

  • Not completely waterproof.
  • The UL Mittens are made of our ultralight water-resistant, ultrathin, water-permeable fabric. Please handle them with care as they can be torn or ripped when rubbed against rocks or poked by branches.
  • The UL Mittens are comfortable when you are on the move in a relatively warm environment. However, it is less warm than normal gloves so we strongly recommend you wear wool inner gloves to keep you warm especially when severe weather is to be expected.
  • In order to maximize the moisture-permeability of the two materials, after-use care is necessary. The performances of the membrane, facing and lining can be impaired by dirt, sweat, skin oils, or other substances. Please follow the washing instructions of each product to properly wash, dry, and keep clean. The use of rainwear-specific detergent is highly recommended. The water-permeability is hindered as the water repellency is declined. The water repellency can be restored by applying the heat of a tumble dryer at low-temperature or a hairdryer. Use of a water repellent agent is recommended if it is not restored by the heat of the dryer.
  • The Pertex Shield Pro uses ultralight and thin microporous material. Vaseline, insect repellent, and ethanol-containing substances such as hair creams, cosmetics, and sunscreens may stain the fabric. They may also hinder the water-permeability of the fabric.

Seam sealing

The UL Mittens use waterproof materials, but the seams are not sealed. With a little seam sealer, they can be made fully rainproof.

Instructions

We recommend Gear Aid’s “Seam Grip + WP” due to its high resistance to water and deterioration. It is a typical seam sealer glue that comes with a brush for application. Please use the brush to seam seal the Mittens is recommended. A spatula or cotton swab can be a substitute for the brush.

Stuffing the Mittens will make it easier to apply on curved areas such as the fingertips. In the photo, the body of the Mitten is stuffed with bubble wrap and the thumb with some tissue paper. It will be easier to apply the sealer when it is fully stuffed with the cord lock tightened.

The seam sealer can be applied on either the outer or inner seams, but application on the outer side is recommended for the following reasons: The inside of the mittens has a seam allowance, so if applied on the inside, it can be sticky and annoying even after the sealer is dry when in direct contact with skin. Also, application on the outer side enhances the water resistance. Apply the agent generously. Do not spread it widely. It will look nice if applied thinly along with the stitch, but it is better to apply it as thick as the width of the brush that comes with “Seam Grip + WP” for better water resistance. After application, let it dry for about 8 hours.
